Click Here: Town of Selma Fair Housing Survey
The Town of Selma has received a Community Development Block Grant Infrastructure funding from the NC Department of Environmental Quality, Division of Water Infrastructure (DEQ-DWI) to make improvements within the Town. To fulfill a portion of conditions for the project, the town adopted a fair housing plan and each quarter takes action to affirmatively further fair housing.
Due to federal regulatory changes in 2014, funding recipients are required to develop an Assessment of Fair Housing that includes data collection from the census and other data bases, local knowledge of surrounding housing impediments and information from citizens participation. Therefore, the Town is required to present enhanced community participation, outreach efforts and identification of local contributing factors to impediments of fair housing choice.
The Federal Fair Housing Act prohibits the denial of housing to a person based on the person's membership in one or more of the classes under the Act. The protected classes are Race, Color, Religion, National Origin, Sex, Famillial Status and Disability. In addition, it is illegal to coerce, intimidate, threaten or interfere with a person seeking to exercise rights under the Fair Housing Act.
As a result, the survey link above has been prepared to see how familiar the Town is with the Fair Housing Law of 1968, as amended, through the Housing and Community Development Act of 1974. Please complete the survey and leave the results. The Wooten Company will be compiling the returned information to satisfy the request from DWI for the updated Assessment of Fair Housing.
If you desire, an advisory session may be scheduled between Community Development Representatives, yourself and others to further explain the program or answer any questions you may have. Additionally, the Fair Housing Bill ratified by the North Carolina Assembly is available (in English and Spanish) at the the Selma Town Hall, 114 N. Raiford Street, NC 27576-2833, phone number 919-965-9841; TDD: 1-800-735-2962, to be viewed upon request. This information is available in Spanish or any other language upon request.
